About US
The Medical Research Council MRC UK is an internationally recognised centre
of excellence with dominant research themes in the areas of HIV and emerging
infections, vaccines and immunity, and chronic diseases and cancer. Through a
multidisciplinary approach, intersecting basic science, epidemiological
research, social-behavioural research and the conduct of new intervention
evaluation studies, the Unit contributes knowledge on changing epidemics and
diseases, the evaluation of innovative health care options, treatment and
prevention and the development of health policy and practice in Africa and
worldwide. Following the signing of strategic transfer agreements between the
London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine LSHTM and the Medical
Research Council MRC UK, the Unit formally joined LSHTM on 1st February
2018. The exciting new partnership will boost research capacity into current
and emerging health issues in Africa and throughout the world. The Unit is
based at the UVRI Entebbe campus with established outposts in Kalungu, Masaka,
Wakiso and Kampala Districts.
Job Summary The Senior Data Manager will oversee all studies in the NCD
program ensuring that they are complaint with the unit data policies.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Oversee validation of program study databases;
To liaise with the study PI’s within the NCD program right from proposal
writing to see that data to be collected meets the minimum requirements for
the unit;
Design and build data collection tools, for trial databases and any other
supporting technologies, Ensure the data collected is relevant and relates to
the protocol;
Merge datasets from different study sites in main database;
Develop a working Data management file relating to the NCD studies;
Modify and create data entry screens for these studies;
Supervise and offer data management for all NCD studies;
Run reports to identify and solve discrepancies, missing records/data and
other problems with the data in the databases;
Ensure that data corrections received are updated on the main database;
Ensure adequate backups of the data exist on servers, and are available in
case of problems;
Reports produced as required by study investigators;
Generate outputs from database for study investigators/coordinators and
Export reports send them as attachments;
Carries out checks on data quality and raises any queries with relevant
research assistants;
Ensure data compliance issues are met GCP/regulatory, Prepare data for
Check summary data reports for anomalies and correct as necessary;
Run simple analyses such as: merging and appending files, calculating new
variables, obtaining line lists and frequencies, and graphs;
Organise the results of these analyses into a presentable format reports
to pass to the Principal Investigator PI;
Extract data and transform it to a format required by the PI, sponsors or
collaborators; and,
Supervise junior data management staff in the program.
Line Management Responsibilities
Supervise Data management staff for All NCD studies.
LSHTM Integration
Align study SOP’s with LSHTM.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience
The ideal candidate must hold a Master’s Degree in Computer science, IT,
Statistics /Medical statistics, Quantitative economics; Or Data Manager with
5+ years’ experience managing multi country clinical trials;
At least 4 years’ experience using STATA;
Should be familiar with governmental regulations and legal requirements
related research data;
Knowledge of Openclinica, ODK and Redcap;
Knowledge of system validation and SQL server is desired;
Knowledge in GDPR, GCP, NCD; and,
Good attention to detail skills.
